A Tarrantino remake of the Wizard of Oz

I Hate Fairyland Volume 1: Madly Ever After collects the first five issues of this All-Skottie Young series.I have been a great fan of Skottie Young’s comic-book covers for Marvel, and I remember how much I looked forward to his “Little X-Men” comic, only to find that, like so many of the early“What If?” comics, it didn’t really have a proper story, it just gave the writers and artists the chance to kill people they wouldn’t normally be allowed to – just like Watchmen, in fact.In this story, Skottie is allowed to kill lots of people, and other living things, but at least it is all done in the best possible taste. Or, maybe not.As the lead character’s sidekick points out, all the food in Fairyland is just sugar added to more sugar; and this story tended to drag a bit as we basically get more and more of the same, though with different colourings and other additives.There are genuinely funny scenes in here, but also quite a lot of repetitive ones, and you are (I was) quite glad to reach the fairly obvious ending. However, tastes vary, and despite all the above, I am off to the library to order the second volume.This is still more imaginative than a lot of comics produced by independents and even the big companies.
